Preschool Checklist
Professional speech therapy could help your child if he or she:
- Is difficult to understand
- Displays a limited vocabulary
- Has a history of chronic ear infections
- Experiences difficulties with producing sounds correctly (e.g. substitutes ‘th’ for ‘s’)
- Exhibits frustration or aggression when not easily understood by others
- Uses gestures to communicate more than words
- Repeats sounds, words or phrases (e.g. ‘sssock’; ‘I I I want icecream’)
- Experiences difficulties in following two step instructions (e.g. get your bag; then sit on the floor)
- Experiences difficulties in finding the right words to express themselves
- Displays difficulties when asking and answering different ‘wh’ questions (e.g. what, where, who, when, why questions)
- Is unable to produce complex sentences using joining words (e.g. and, because)
- Displays grammatical errors in their speech
- Experiences difficulties in retelling a simple story
- Has difficulties with phonological awareness (e.g. recognising rhyme, identifying beginning or ending sounds in words).
